I just can’t figure out why today’s book revisions are taking so long. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe I’m low on sleep. Or on chocolate. Then again, it could be the weather. Yeah, the weather. That must be it…
(Yes, I do freely admit that taking pictures of the meddlesome beast and then posting them on the internet probably doesn’t help my already-hampered efficiency. However, it’s much more fun than tossing The Basil into a room, closing the door on his face, ignoring him until he quits howling for attention, and getting back to work.)
I think rewrites maybe should do a bit slowly. For me, the first draft is always the draft of abandon – where I can write whatever I want, do a curve on the plotline and introduce characters in each chapter. The next draft though, requires examination, thought and deliberation – maybe the cat is trying to help you edit?

That’s a good way of looking at it, Writerchick. I tend to be kind of anal on the first draft, which means it takes a little longer and I seize up when I can’t find the right word, but at least it makes revision a little easier in the long run. It’s kind of The Basil to help, though, no matter what methods I use to revise!

he looks exactly like my cat gracie – same exact color and all. why are cats so obsessed with pens? mine are mischevious pen thiefs – they take off with them when they think i’m not looking and i have to chase them down or risk ink on the carpet.

Kate, we’re not exactly certain. He was a feral cat whom we began fostering when he was just four weeks old. Based on his behavior and his crossed eyes, we think he has some Siamese in him, although he doesn’t look much like a Siamese. He actually acts like he’s half dog, but I don’t think that’s likely…
I would love to work from home, but I know I’d never get any work done for this exact reason! Henry likes to be on my lap every waking (and sleeping) moment, which is super-cute… but not so conducive to doing anything productive.
O.P.H., I have that same problem! I always wanted affectionate cats; I just keep reminding myself of that! Sometimes it helps. Throwing toys for them sometimes distracts them long enough for me to get some work done.
